Playlist Peek: Retro Disney World Podcast
“Taking you back to the Vacation Kingdom of the World…the way it was…and the way it is in your memories.”
I am always on the lookout for new podcasts, but admittedly, I am incredibly picky about what podcasts I listen to, especially while running. I need the right balance of informative, fun, engaging personalities, and interesting topics. Frankly, I am not a fan of podcasts that are over-produced. To me, when I take a podcast along for a run with me, I look at it as inviting some friends to hang out with me for an hour or two at a time, and when a podcast is produced to the nth degree, it does not work for me. See, I told you that I am picky. So, when I find a podcast that I enjoy, I want to share it with our readers.
A while back, while training for a marathon, I was lucky enough to stumble upon the Retro Disney World Podcast, and I cannot tell you how many miles I’ve run while hanging out with the Retro Team, but every one of them has been enjoyable.
The Retro Disney World Podcast is a weekly podcast dedicated to telling stories about the history of the Walt Disney World parks and resorts from the perspective of fans, but from within a historical lense…literally.
Retro WDW specializes in sourcing their reference material directly, often times restoring guest trip recordings, such as old films, pictures, and videos, to ensure the accuracy of the information that they are reporting. Often time they are able to uncover and share details that, while seemingly too insignificant to record in most sources, nonetheless encapsulate the historical je ne sais quoi of a trip to WDW in a particular era.
Each week the team takes a deep dive into various aspects of the WDW resort, whether it be specific attractions, hotels, or specific eras and celebrations in the nearly half century of the park’s existence, listeners are always bound to learn something new, and rediscover some long-forgotten nugget of a memory from their youthful visits to the World. Some times their descriptions are so detailed, one can almost smell the wall carpet!
Tell Me A Little More?
This podcast appeals equally to the Disney geek and history nerd inside of me. It may not be for everyone, as each episode takes detailed looks back into historical subjects that may not appeal to the casual fan, but which never fail to keep me captivated.
It is sad that I need to say that it is remarkable that a podcast that aims to be informative to its listeners actually researches the material it shares from reliable sources, but alas, here we are. Regardless, the Retro WDW team is among the best that I have encountered. They really do an excellent job of researching and presenting quality historical information. Just as importantly, they are never afraid to admit when a fact is beyond the bounds of their expertise, a testament to the realty that the pursuit of knowledge is never ending.
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly?
The podcast episodes are pretty lengthy by typical podcast standards, which, to me, makes them ideal for long training runs, particularly those dreaded marathon long training runs! If you are one who requires high beats-per-minutes entertainment to keep you going on the run, this may not be ideal for you. However, if you are like me, and long training runs are ones in which you sit back and enjoy the passing of time, well, this podcast may be just the educational distraction you have been looking for.
Thanks to the Retro WDW Podcast Team for keeping us entertained and educated on “the Vacation Kingdom of the World…the way it was…and the way it is in
your OUR memories.”
Enjoy the freedom of going wherever your feet, imagination, & determination take you!
