The Where: Epcot, Walt Disney World, Florida
The When: January 13 through February 20, 2017 (offered for a limited time only)

Casual Runners know that while running is a part of our lives, it is not our entire lives. Better yet, as Casual Running allows us to be healthier and live more active lifestyles, it allows us to experience new and wonderful adventures. In this special series, we will look at fun Casual Adventures that our Team takes on when we are away from our training, even if its only for a day or two! And remember, adventure is out there!

The Setup

As you know, Candace and I just returned from a 2 week adventure in Florida that included Cigna’s 2017 runDisney Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend and some up close encounters with Florida’s favorite aquatic residents (more on all of that to come!), and even some unexpected inspirational surprises along the way. But we wanted to lead off our coverage with a review of a fun little adventure that can be experienced for a limited time in Epcot.

Epcot’s International Festival of the Arts

This month, Epcot debuted its first ever International Festival of the Arts, which celebrates all varieties of artistry, including and especially, visual, musical, and culinary. Oh, and there is a healthy dollop of imagination thrown in for good measure!

At the Festival you will find a scaled down version of the food kiosks from Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival, art demonstrations, art for sale, and even a fabulous Broadway performance series featuring hits from classic Disney Broadway musicals. Needless to say, Disney is working hard to draw big crowds to Epcot during an otherwise slower time of year sandwiched between the runDisney Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend and the Princess Half Marathon Weekend.

Now, for that healthy dollop of imagination we told you Disney brought to the party…

Figment’s Brush With the Masters

As you know, we LOVE it when Disney adds popup scavenger hunts to their parks, and we would love to see more of this. We shared with you how great Remy’s Hide & Squeak and the Easter EGGtravaganza are, and even enjoyed (to an admittedly lesser extent) the short-lived Lion Guard adventure as well. So, when we heard that Epcot would be introducing a new scavenger hunt, we got excited.

When we learned that this new event would feature my all-time favorite Disney character – FIGMENT!!!! – I lost my mind.

Side note: I LOVE that Epcot is featuring Figment more and more as its mascot for its special festivals, this lovable purple dragon deserves as much love as he can get. PLUS, they have special magic shots featuring Figment! What more can you want?

Adventuring the Adventure

Figment’s Brush with the Masters plays just like Remy’s Hide & Squeak and the Easter EGGtravaganzaYou do not have to pay to play, but if you want to do so, you pick up a map with stickers for $6.99 plus tax (no discounts available) at any one of various marked locations around the park. You objective is to find a single painting in each of the countries/pavilions around Epcot’s World Showcase.  Each painting is inspired by a classic masterpiece, with a not-so-subtle Figment invasion thrown in for good measure.

If you do not want to buy the map, you can simply walk around World Showcase seeking out these paintings on your own.

If you do choose to buy the map, once you find each painting, you simply place the sticker that corresponds with that masterpiece in the space provided for the country where you found it in the park. You then redeem your map for your choice of 1 of 4 special edition Figment magnets.

Hint: You do not need to complete the scavenger hunt to collect your “prize,” rather you can redeem it at any time, including at the time of purchase if you like.

Bonus Tip: You will only receive one magnet per map, so, if you want to collect all 4 magnets, you will have to purchase 4 separate maps.

The Rundown

The gameplay could not be simpler, making it suitable for park guests of almost any age. Plus, these hunts give an added sense of purpose to explore deeper into the fascinating pavilions featured in Epcot’s World Showcase (as if you needed more incentive). I particularly like how it encourages younger visitors to appreciate these cultural treasures.

The only knock that I have on this game is that, compared to other scavenger hunts, this one was too easy. Normally Candace and I are uber competitive during these scavenger hunts. However, and, while I do not want to spoil anything for anyone, once we discerned the pattern to the placement of the paintings, it was too easy. We reached a 2-2 tie, and then simply agreed to call it a draw and locate the remaining paintings together as we pretty much knew where to go to find them in the remaining countries. That being said, guests who are not as familiar with World Showcase may not have as easy of a time locating them, even if they knew the pattern.

In the end, despite the disappointing placement of the paintings, we enjoyed the hunt and applaud Disney for continuing to work these simple, yet fun events into the parks, and encourage them to keep doing so. PLUS, the fact that the hunt featured Figment, well, I could go on and on about how much I loved that aspect, but I will simply say “thank you” and hope for more Figment’y Fun to come!

Now, as for the paintings themselves, the Imagineers did a great job…dare I saw…re-IMAGINING…these masterpieces into fun modern pieces. Overall, this is a great addition to the park, and we look forward to what Disney will do with future iterations of this experience as it grows and evolves. So, go out there and enjoy it while you still can!
