The Casual Runner

Casual Runner Mailbag – October 2016

Ok, wait one second.

Would someone like to tell us where October went? It seems like we just started the fall race season, and now, here we are, staring down the barrel of an all-out Halloween weekend. Where did the time go?

Team Casual Runner is VERY happy right now, but we are admittedly a house divided. There is a little matter of the World Series going on right now, and it features the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs. Mike, Candace, Nick, and Steve are lined up in support of their home-state Indians, new Chicagoan Tracy is backing the Cubs, and Jennifer and Jake are just eager for the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival. So, only time will tell which team breaks their curse first, and whether Team CR unity will be restored.

Ok, lets not waste any more time, we have a lot to cover, so lets go ahead and open up the Casual Runner Mailbag!

Wine & Dine Like We’ve Never Seen It Before…Which Does Not Say Much.

It is not even November yet and our readers had a lot to say about the upcoming 2016 runDisney Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend. Candace shared her runDisney 2016 Wine & Dine Preview, which got things rolling.

Boyd sent this along:

“Thanks! Looking forward to getting my coast to coast medal!!!”

Good luck Boyd, that is one sharp medal, you’ll love wearing it around the parks.

Valerie wanted to make sure our readers were aware of a less-than-stellar part of the course:

“You missed the part about the water treatment plant on bear island road! Last two times I ran the marathon, there were a lot of characters on that stretch though, so hopefully they will be there for this one too!”

You are right about the water treatment plant being memorable (we talk about it a lot in our WDW Marathon reviews!) but, unfortunately, Disney has not yet come up with a character meet n greet that can make up for that smell!

Speaking of less-than-great course features, Mike took an in-depth look at how runDisney missed big time in designing the 2016 runDisney Wine and Dine Courses, many of you had a lot to say, including Susan who shared:

“Really glad someone was able to voice everyone’s concerns about the course. It’s my first half marathon and my second Disney race…reading this just makes me even more nervous. Was really hoping for the magical distractions to get me through those terrible miles 5-11. Wonder if there’s a way to get an official response from RunDisney?”

Thanks Susan. No need to be nervous, stick to your training, trust in your training, and focus on what you can control come race day. Even if the course is not the best, you can still make the best of your race experience and we wish you all the best!

Please let us know how you do and maybe we will see you down at the World on race weekend. We do hear from a lot of race directors who appreciate our feedback and tell us that they incorporate our ideas and suggestions into their race weekend. The ball is in runDisney’s court!

Food and Wine Festival Shenanigans.

On our look at the Best Desserts at the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival, Jake decided to call Mike out:

“Since Mike broke the rules and went “off kiosk” with the school bread, I feel compelled to give a shout out to the trusty cronut. This delight makes any trip to Epcot just a little bit sweeter. So, next time you’re in the park, go ahead and “treat yo’self!”

Since Jake got things rolling, Jason from Disney Good Eats chimed in “Mike totally cheated on this one!”

Gentlemen, gentlemen. It does not matter who cheated or who went off-kiosk, what matters is that we all enjoy some tasty Food and Wine Festival deliciousness. So, let us all let by-gones be by-gones, and break bread together. Might we suggest, some SCHOOL BREAD?

The enticement of school bread makes us do strange things.

Don’t forget to check out  our selections for the Festival’s best drinks, the Must Dos at Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival 2016,  and our Wine and Dine Half Marathon and Lumiere’s Two Course Challenge Preview.

Run and Ride!

We saw a lot of readers at Kings Island running and riding  their way to a great race weekend. Candace kicked things off with her review of the 2016 Kings Island 10k and many of you actively reached out to us on Twitter (Casual Runner & Casual Adventurer).

Rufus gave us this shout out:
“@Casual_Runner @Runandriderace @KingsIslandPR ‘Keep it up!'”

Thanks Rufus! We hope you had a great race weekend managed to get in some great coaster time.

Dr. Cool still rules…

Barry wanted to let Jennifer know that he appreciates her review of Dr. Cool Wraps:

“Major thanks for the article!…”

Why the ellipses at the end? Well, we had to set it up properly, because Barry won his way into our hearts by sliding a subtle pun into his note: “Its very COOL!”

Yup, sometimes the simplest puns are the best. Thanks Barry! And now you know, your surest way into the CR Mailbag is to bring a solid pun game!

Well, that is going to have to do it for this installment of the Casual Runner mailbag. We have a great lineup of articles coming your way in October, so be sure to stay tuned, and, don’t worry, we will be back next month with another edition of the Casual Runner Mailbag.
