The Casual Runner

Second Anniversary Top Ten Celebration!

Hold on one second. You are kidding right? Yes, you must be kidding.

There is no way that it has already been 2 years since Casual Runner launched and we ran our first mile. It has all just gone by so quickly, but what a ride it has been!

Ann PicTwo years ago today, on July 13, 2014, a group of running buddies, looking to spread the joy of running, active lifestyles, travel, and a fun sense of adventure came together to launch Casual Runner. When we published that first article, none of us could have imagined just how huge readers would respond to what we had to say. The response has been, in a word, overwhelming. In another word, it has been humbling.

You see, the members of Team Casual Runner are just regular people who like to share their experiences to help others. So, for us, it is humbling to see how many readers – literally from all over the world – consistently read our articles and make Casual Runner a part of their regular internet reading and running and fitness routines. From every page view and link click, to every social media follow, like, and share, and to all of the many kind comments and words our readers send us, we are thrilled with the reception Casual Runner receives. As long as you keep running and reading, we are committed to keep bringing you the stories that have made our Casual Running and travel adventures the hallmark of this running community.

Last year, to celebrate our first anniversary, we decided to bring you a rundown of the top 10 most read articles from Casual Runner’s first year. Not only was this a fun nostalgic diversion, but our readers loved it.  So we decided that, like with running itself, when you know something works, you don’t mess with it.

This Top 10 list was, in every sense, selected by our readers as these are the Top 10 most read articles in the history of Casual Runner. Whether you read them on your desktops, tablets, or smartphones; whether you read them while enjoying your morning cup of coffee, while on the treadmill or exercise bike, or while you were at your desk and supposed to be working; and whether or not you agreed with everything our Team had to say, these are the most-read articles in the history of Casual Runner.

A map showing where the readers of Casual Runner call home – come on Greenland & Sub-Saharan Africa – come & join us for some Casual Running!

So, without any further adieu, here are your Top 10 most-read articles from first 2 years of Casual Runner:

10. Starting off our list is Mike’s review of the inaugural Rock Hall Half Marathon in Cleveland, Ohio. This article currently holds the Casual Runner record for the highest single day of traffic to a single article in the history of the site. But Mike cannot take all of the credit, the event itself is appealing as its tie-in with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum helped it to earn a Golden Runner Award for Best Debut Race.

9. Our readers are always looking for new and exciting race events, regardless of the distance, that provide them with a fun race-day experience. Jennifer’s review of the Across the Bay 10k in Maryland, which takes runners across a magnificent engineering wonder, shares the fun of enjoying spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay while running.

8. The Casual Runner Team reviews a lot of products that we think Casual Runners will find helpful. According to our readers, the most important need they have appears to be stopping the chafe! At least we assume so, as our product review of Body Glide is our most-read product review of all time, finding its way to #8 on our list.

7. We cannot say it enough: our readers really are the best. Number 7 is an article from Ryan, a guest contributor who shared his inspirational story of returning to running to take on the Portland Marathon. You can also read Ryan’s first mile story here.

6. This family runsDisney and, more importantly, knows how to have a lot of fun. You see, it was not enough for Melissa and Jeff Stolasz to book a Disney World family vacation, but they did so to coincide with their son’s birthday and the Inaugural Star Wars Dark Side Challenge Weekend.  The trick was how to get their son to train for a 10k without telling him what was going on. Well, the rest is pure runDisney magic and some incredible family memories!

5. Jennifer brought you the #5 article on our list as she represented the Team at the 2014 Navy-Air Force Half Marathon in Washington, D.C.  Our readers love not only her review of the event, but her ability to convey the theming of events, especially those that are in tribute to those who serve in the Armed Forces. And, speaking of the American Armed Forces…

4. Coming in at #4 is Mike’s review of the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. You can see why this race is regarded as one of the best annual marathon events, really, anywhere.  You can also check out Part 2 of his review for the rest of the story.

3. Jennifer has a real touch for sprinkling a little bit of Pixie Dust in her writing, which may be why her review of the 2015 runDisney Tinkerbell Half Marathon in Disneyland is now the third most read article of all time. Maybe it is the cool SMOs, or maybe it is those wonderful costumes, whatever it is, our readers do love Jennifer (as do we!).

2. When Candace joined the Team, she did so in a big way. Her article previewing the runDisney Princess Half Marathon Weekend quickly became one of our most-read articles in its first week. Not only that, we heard from so many readers who loved her helpful tips, hints, and suggestions so much that they asked us why we don’t do one of these features for every runDisney race weekend. The truth is, no one ever thought about it before! This was all Candace’s idea, and since you all loved it (and her) so much, we are making race previews a regular feature, and already gave you previews of the Tinkerbell Half Marathon Weekend in Disneyland and the Inaugural Star Wars Dark Side Challenge Weekend.  Like we always say, if you keep reading them, we will keep writing them! So, stay tuned for more upcoming race weekend previews.

And now, for the most read feature article in the history of Casual Runner…

1. The Casual Runner Team runs a lot of runDisney races, and so do our readers. But, before you can toe the line to run those magical miles, you first have to register for the races, and we all know that registering for runDisney races can be stressful and challenging. This is why we brought you some tips to help make this process easier for you. Jennifer’s tips continue to be helpful in alleviating some of the joy and terror of this process, and, based on our readers’ success in registering, we are looking forward to meeting even more Casual Runners at future runDisney events in year 3!

There you have you. It has been an exciting two years for Casual Runner, and we eagerly anticipate the launch of year #3, as we plan on going to many new and exciting places, take on new races and fitness challenges, and have a whole lot of fun along the way. But we know that, no matter how many miles we log, they would not mean anything without the continued support of you, our readers and fellow Casual Runners. We are ever-mindful of this, and we appreciate you checking back to read what we have to say and for joining us on this Casual Running adventure.

Enjoy the freedom of going wherever your feet, imagination, & determination take you!
