What are these virtual race things people have been talking about? How do they work? Jennifer has run some and she seems to collect some cool SMOs in the process, but how do they work? Ok, while we just ran a CR Mailbag yesterday, we cheated and carved some reader questions out of it so we could answer them all at once.
What’s a virtual race, you ask?
Virtual races are just that. They are race events where runners get to choose when and where they will complete the mileage on their own. We spoke with some race directors (of traditional race events) who said that they initially added virtual runs for military personnel serving overseas who could not come home to run races. Race directors allowed the deployed service persons to run the event’s distance on their own time and course (usually an overseas military base) and shipped them the event shirt and medal.
This worked so well that it grew in popularity to where events began regularly including virtual race options to their events, allowing more runners to participate even when they couldn’t travel. With this, virtual races continued to grow in popularity so much that race directors began creating race events that are exclusively virtual. Pretty cool evolution, huh? Yes kids, history IS cool.
This brings us to Level Up Runs, one such virtual race organizer. Why reinvent the wheel? We’ll let them explain how their events work:
“A virtual race is one where you sign up online for a specified distance (5k, 10k, half marathon, etc), and then run at your own time and pace. You get to map out your own course and keep track of your own time and distance. These runs are on the honor system. You are responsible for submitting your time and running the required distance (Or Hiking, Walking, or even using a Treadmill). When you sign up for a Level Up Virtual Run, you will receive a finishers medal along with prizes and gifts from our sponsors. A percentage of every level up virtual runs entry will be donated to schools around the US who are struggling to keep their sports programs running.“
OK, we added the emphasis to the last part as we know that our runners appreciate it when their running adventures support good causes such as this. We are teaming up with Level Up Runs to give our readers a chance to check out their virtual race lineup.

If we were a cheesy TV infomercial, we would say “but wait! there’s more.” But we would never do such a thing.
But wait! There’s more! (Oh well, we tried to exercise restraint, we just aren’t very good at it).
