Casual Runners know that while running is a part of our lives, it is not our entire lives. Better yet, as Casual Running allows us to be healthier and live more active lifestyles, it allows us to experience new and wonderful adventures. In this special series, we will look at fun Casual Adventures that our Team takes on when we are away from our training, even if its only for a day or two! And remember, adventure is out there!
The What: Remy’s Hide & Squeak
The Where: Epcot, Walt Disney World, Florida
The When: October 2015 (offered for a limited time only)
There is no secret that Casual Runners love the Disney Theme Parks, and are known to visit the parks even when runDisney races are not taking place. Frequent visitors to Disney parks are always looking for new and exciting ways to experience the parks. As adventure is out there, you just need to know where to look to find it.
The Epcot Food & Wine Festival is one of the great annual events that takes place in Epcot every fall, featuring a selection of cuisines and adult beverages from around the world. We usually experience this festival during our annual trips to the runDisney Wine and Dine Half Marathon, but this year we made a special trip down to Walt Disney World for some scuba diving fun (more on that in a future Casual Adventure piece!). While we were there, of course we checked out the Food & Wine Festival, and discovered a new and fun offering.
Once in Epcot, we decided to check out the new game debuting at this year’s Festival: Remy’s Hide & Squeak. The premise is simple. You pay $7.95 and are given a map of World Showcase with stickers. Cast Members hide small Remy figurines in each of the World Showcase countries, each of which is holding a food item. The map comes with stickers with images of these food items. As you visit each country, you look for the Remy statues and place the sticker of the corresponding food item on the map where you found that statue. Once you find all of the statues, you are “rewarded” with a prize, in this case your choice of a limited edition Disney pin featuring Remy.
Hint: You get the prize whether you complete the challenge or not, so you can actually redeem your map for your prize at the time you buy it. While this may not seem sporting to some, it makes things easier on participants as you do not have to go back to collect your pin and can focus on enjoying the experience.
The game is simple enough, right? Well, for a game that is so simple, it is surprisingly fun.
As you stroll around World Showcase sampling the various food, wine, and beer offerings, this game gives you an additional fun past time to do. Aside from gastro gluttony, you have an additional purpose and intent to stroll along the promenade. Some of the statues are hiding in plain site, while others are much more challenging to find. Playing with friends and family makes the game that much more fun and enjoyable, but, be warned, it can get a little bit competitive.
We played the game over the course of 3 days. We found some of the statues quickly, while others required second visits to the pavilions to locate them. To our frustration, one pavilion actually required a third visit! Eventually, we did find them all and enjoyed ourselves in the process.
You do not have to pay for the map to play the game, as anyone can look for the statues throughout World Showcase. Conversely, you can play multiple times to collect additional pins in the limited edition series. Although you will be seeking the same statues, the cost of playing the game is the same as Disney charges for similar pins, so you are effectively paying for the pins themselves, and the game play is a fun bonus.
So, if you are looking for a fun little adventure when you are visiting the Epcot Food & Wine Festival, you may want to give Remy’s Hide & Squeak a shot. And remember, adventure is out there!
