Greetings Casual Runners! In our last edition of the Casual Runner Mailbag we promised you that Spring was right around the corner, and it looks like it has indeed finally arrived (for good, we hope!). This means better weather, longer days, more scenic running trails, and a reduction in the number of excuses not to get out there and go running!
It is time for us to once again open up the Casual Runner Mailbag and turn things over to you, our readers and fellow Casual Runners.
Races from a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Many of you enjoyed Jennifer’s review of the inaugural runDisney Star War’s Half Marathon at the Disneyland Resort. Mrs. Morrison weighed in via Google+ and proudly declared: “I WOULD SO RUN THIS.” She is not alone. Whether it was the theming, the characters, the costumes, or the fact that it was another quality runDisney event, the Star Wars theme really struck a chord with Casual Runners. We have a feeling a few members of the Team are going to try and get out to California to run these races again, so you will all be in good company!
Speaking of Google+ (yes, Casual Runner is on Google+ now, so please add us to your circles!), Eric sent us this note: “Saved as a favorite, I really like your site!” Thanks for the kind words Eric, we appreciate having you in the Casual Running community and look forward to bringing you more great features!
Lots of Animal Encounters & Lots of Jens
Mike shared with us the list of his Top 5 animal encounters during his Casual Running adventures. There was some incredulity from our readers, especially at the chicken attacks. But other Casual Runners easily related to Mike’s encounters, as they shared their own. And it would not be a Casual Runner Mailbag unless we heard from at least two people named Jen, or Jennifer, or Jenny, or, well, you get the idea.
Jenny from Baltimore told us:
“I’ve got dogs, snakes, deer, cool bugs…a red-tailed hawk and I once shared a moment on a trail run too. I nearly had a really bad experience with a dog who spun its owner around while the owner was picking up the dog’s business as I ran by. Guess whose fault it was that the man didn’t have a good hold on the dog? Then there was the very sweet German Shepard under control on a leash at a stop sign. I assured the owner I like dogs, said hi to the dog, and the dog clearly knew this was an invitation to get pet…next thing I knew, my running glove were covered in slobber.”
Thanks Jenny, this just proves that it is not the dogs, it’s the dog owners.
Jennifer from New Jersey (yup, the same Jennifer who guest-contributed her great first mile story, provided her own Top 5 list:
- A coyote – walking down the sidewalk of my residential subdivision.
- A large buck chasing another deer – both ran about 5 feet in front of me in a local park.
- A fox.
- Bunnies – lots and lots of bunnies.
- Chipmunks – I enjoy chasing them to see where they hide.
Jennifer, thanks for sharing, but you really cannot just leave #5 hanging there, we really need to hear more about the chasing of the chipmunks! If anyone else has animal encounter stories to share, we definitely want to hear them.
We Promise That We Did Not Go Anywhere
Given some recent changes with Facebook’s settings, some of you had some trouble receiving updates when new features are added to our website. To help resolve some of the confusion, we sent out this message:
Dear Casual Runners: Some of you may not be receiving notifications in your newsfeed when we post new content because Facebook has changed its settings. To make sure you receive notices (which we only post when new articles are released), you need to turn on notifications. To do so, please go to Casual Runner’s Facebook page, & at the top there is a drop down menu on the “like” button. Click it & select “Get Notifications.” This should ensure you receive notices when we post to the CR Facebook page. Please share this with your friends and let the Team know if you have any questions or other problems. Thanks!
It turns out this helped out a lot of readers, who are now once again receiving timely updates and enjoying our articles. Staccie wrote to us:
“This is funny you posted because I just said to [my daughter] yesterday that I haven’t seen anything from Casual Runner for a while and wondered what was up with that, but when I went to the page there has been a bunch of stuff posted lately!!”
We load new content several times a week, so if you are following us primarily on Facebook and do not hear from us, go directly to the site and you are sure to see what has been happening in the Casual Running world. Also, you can of course also follow us on Twitter and add Casual Runner to your circles on Google+ as well!
Well that is going to do it for this installment of the Casual Runner Mailbag. The Team loves hearing from you, so please keep those emails, messages, tweets, and Facebook and Google+ messages coming in. In the meantime, welcome Spring the right way by getting out there and keep pursuing your Casual Running goals.
The Casual Runner Team wants to hear from you.
